The following words were spoken by Commander W.D.A. de Courcy King (DSO, DSC, AE) at the tree planting in Den helder, June 2006:

"In Memorium, a tribute to my fellow submariners, who did not return from patrol in World War II."

Their tombstone stretches in a mighty arc

From Norway's deep

Through Africa's shoreline

To the Eastern march

And on the beach of Malta's sand

Their bones are rocked by feeble tides

They were the flower of our land

Commander King can be seen through the tree.
